The Holy Christ of the Flagellation of Las Torres de Cotillas, virtuoso art by the Murcian sculptor José Hernández Navarro. (06/02/2019)

The Santísimo Christ of the Flagellation of the Towers of Cotillas, titular carving of the homonymous brotherhood with realized accomplishment by the Ortiz Marín family of the locality, was the image with which in the year 1990 the sculptor oriúndo of the hamlet of Murcia of The Ramos José Antonio Hernández Navarro inaugurated a saga of seven works of well-defined style and slender and grandiose canons under the iconographic and liturgical theme of the torture of Jesus.

It is a work of maturity of the artist, next to the San Miguel of the also Cofradía Torrena of the Santísimo Christ Crucified, in which the Santísimo appears tied to a high column.

The scene reflects the moment in which a Christ, with a powerful and vehement look, supports his body against the column, not embraced to it, reason why there resides one of the originalities and, therefore, novelties of the stature, the one of tie the wrists of Jesus to the upper end of that arboreal pillar, thus forming another singularity such as having before our eyes an entire figure in block, of amazing verticality and detailed based on concavities, sinuosities, recesses and recesses.

Contemplating the Christ of the Flagellation of the Towers of Cotillas, taken to process for the first time by his Brotherhood in the local Holy Week of the year 1991, is to have before vigorous features for the sake of dramatic that projects a spiritual and emotional intensity and balanced, nothing exaggerated or torn, revealing these poses an accurate knowledge of Hernández Navarro of the properties of wood, which, in short, we can consider a virtuosity maker lavished on levels of skill, demonstrations of an undoubted mastery embodied with the gouge of a simple imagery, of sincere, affable, close religiosity, faithful exponent of the Levantine sculpture of Salzillesque heritage and testimony and, to a greater extent, Cofrade de Honor of the institution that houses this prodigy of carving.

In short, a marvel of good art that thickens an artistic, devotional and sentimental heritage of which we should feel the good Torreño and that this year illustrates the poster announcing the procession for children of the local Holy Week.
