Torreño athletes Angel Salinas and Antonio Sales signed a great performance in the veterans' world championship recently played in Malaga.
"Angel was registered in the 100, 200 and 400 meters in the category of over 65 years, but an injury left him KO in the semifinals of 100, where he signed the 16th fastest time with 21.49", explains the councilman of Physical Activity and Sports, Ginés Pérez.
Some problems that reduced him for the rest of the championship, so much that he could not play the 200-meter race.
"Yes he could play the 400 meters, finishing fifth in the second semifinal and 11th by times (1: 03.22)", highlights the mayor.
In addition, despite his injury he grazed the bronze medal in the 4x400 race, covering the first post at the head of the race, but finishing fourth with Cristóbal Godoy, Eduardo Miguel Pinedo and Enrique Aragonés (4: 38.91).
18th at 5,000 meters
"For his part, Antonio was in a meritorious 18th place in the final A of the 5,000 meters for those over 55 years old with a time of 19: 17.05", says Pérez.
"I am very happy and satisfied, since I managed to finish after the week I had spent taking antibiotics for a very strong cold," says Sales.
"We are very proud of both, for their effort, their enthusiasm and their good results in this championship that brought together the best veteran athletes in the world," says the mayor, Isabel María Zapata, who stresses that "they are an example to follow for everybody".
One of the great protagonists of the World Championship in Murcia was José Antonio Alcaraz, winner of the last "Nocturnal Festival of Patron Saint Festivities", proclaiming himself world champion in 1,500 m.
"Successes like this say a lot about the participation and the level of the riders who come to participate in our race, which next year will be its 25th anniversary," Perez emphasizes.
