The municipal government team of Las Torres de Cotillas, with its mayor Joaquín Vela Fernández at the helm, has assessed the most urgent needs of the town and has launched a battery of improvements in various areas.

"We believe it is imperative to undertake a series of works in parks and public spaces, in streets and roads, in municipal buildings, and others that will benefit sport and pets," said the mayor.

"Fulfilling the objectives of the European Union and the Covenant of Mayors on mitigation and adaptation to climate change, we have decided to create shady areas in the Francisco Rabal Park and in the Garden of the Three Witches, next to the Mireia Belmonte Pavilion," he says. the mayor, some works whose objective will be "to reduce the risk of extreme heat due to prolonged exposure to the sun".

In addition, a hydrant will be installed in the Francisco Rabal Park - the nearest one is one kilometer away -, which will ensure the water supply for any fire in the area.

Likewise, an orchard for the elderly will be built, in the so-called Senior Game Garden located between Velázquez, Cristóbal Colón, Río Quípar and Salzillo streets.

Streets and roads

These tasks will also result in the improvement of the firm of various roads in the municipality, such as rural roads in Los Carambas (La Loma), La Rafa (next to La Media Legua), La Olaya and El Pino.

"In these areas, which have a lot of daily traffic, we will proceed to the application of artificial gravel," explains Fernández Vela.

This urgent plan also includes the renewal of asphalt in various streets of the Carmen neighborhood, which are currently seriously deteriorated.

They are the streets Totana, Lorca, Yecla, Cieza, Conde de Romanones (from Cartagena to Totana) and Parcelas (from Cartagena to Avenida del Trabajo).

"In this area we will also proceed to restitution of the speed slowers that comply with current regulations," said the mayor.

The market esplanade, where weekly markets and fairgrounds are installed during the holidays, will also benefit from these improvements.

There public toilets will be built to provide service during these periods of large citizen concentrations.

Sports facilities

Municipal sports facilities will be another focus of attention in this crash program.

On the one hand, the artificial turf of the Onofre Fernández Verdú soccer field will be changed.

"This surface was installed in 2008 and is very deteriorated, so it will proceed to remove it and partially reuse it in parterres of the municipal sports center itself," said the mayor.

Paddle tennis courts and the natural grass field are also included in these tasks.

On the one hand, in the first ones the lawn will be changed -which dates from 2011- and whose current state demands its improvement for an adequate use of athletes;

on the other, in the second toilets will be installed in the rugby field so that users and fans have this basic service.

Benefits for animals

Three projects will contribute from the City Council to improve the treatment of animals in the municipality.

The first will involve the renovation of the municipal kennel, where works will be carried out to improve the stay and handling of animals during the period in which they are in their facilities.

In addition, a canine recreational area (popularly known as 'pipican') will be built in the Francisco Rabal Park, which will have an area of about 260 m2 and in which two concrete benches will be installed, their corresponding informational signage, a dispensing bin of bags and a source of drinking water for people and animals.

Finally, a space will be created in the area of the old dump, next to the municipal cemetery, to house the feline colonies that have to be moved for health and safety reasons.

"With this measure we comply with Law 6/2017, of November 8, on the protection and defense of companion animals in the Region of Murcia," says Fernández Vela.

Improvements in municipal buildings

The improvement works will also be carried out in two municipal buildings.

On the one hand, the old schools of San Pedro will be renovated, with the renovation of their toilets, the placement of sports flooring in the classroom, the installation of an antenna, the air conditioning of the center and the exterior conditioning for the formation of a parterre for work agricultural

On the other, in the civic center of La Media Legua, computer equipment will be incorporated to continue with the homologation of new professional certificates, since these means are essential for delivery according to regulations.
