Torreño City Council adapts its truancy program to the health crisis of COVID-19 (14/04/2020)

The Department of Social Services of Las Torres de Cotillas has adapted its measures against truancy and dropping out of school to the health crisis caused by COVID-19.

"The municipal program for the prevention, monitoring and control of these two situations has adapted to this new reality. Through telephone assistance, e-mail and video calls, an expert professional contacts the students and their families," explains Mayor Joaquín Vela. Fernandez.

"Our main objective is that no one is left behind and the digital divide of the most vulnerable families affects the situations of their children as little as possible in this complicated situation to follow the school year," says the mayor.

This municipal program, subsidized by the Ministry of Education and Universities and the European Social Fund, will run until July in all secondary education centers in the municipality.

"It is a work that has a lot of success in our town and that now, thanks to the excellent work of the professionals of the municipal center of Social Services, it is adapting," says councilor María del Mar Ruiz Rosillo.

Guidelines and guidelines

The actions are aimed at students who were already at risk of absenteeism or poor school performance.

"It seeks to prevent dissociation from work routines and homework assignments that the teaching staff of the center is indicating online," says the mayor.

The guidelines offered to students are:

- how to organize a study / work schedule and create a work habit.

- study techniques according to the tasks to be carried out.

- Intermediation between students and teachers in the absence of any material or academic doubts.

- Online educational resources and motivational videos.

- monitoring of the fulfillment of objectives according to the case.

- academic and professional orientation.

This service offers guidelines to the families of minors for addressing behavioral problems, activities that can benefit the acquisition of healthy habits and routines, and how to promote motivation through communication, agreement and positive reinforcement.
