PSOE-Ciudadanos does not join a PP motion that asks to fight against illegal squatting of homes (30/09/2020)

The PSOE-Citizens Government Team of Las Torres de Cotillas does not join a motion of the local PP that asks to fight against illegal squatting of homes.

The residents of Las Torres de Cotillas were witnesses last Monday night of the lack of commitment shown by the councilors of the PSOE and Ciudadanos by not supporting the motion that the local PP took to Plenary to propose the effective fight against the illegal squatting of households.

The rule of law fails when the owner of a home is defenseless against the illegal occupation of his property. It is the harsh reality of a total helplessness of some citizens who are even still paying the mortgage on their invaded property. To which is added the added anguish of a wait of up to years to recover the occupied dwelling with the height of evils that in that interim of forced appropriation, usurpation, flagrant theft the owner has to continue paying the current expenses of a house that most of the time returns to its hands upside down, with all sleeve for shoulder, that is to say, destroyed at the treacherous whim of the usurpers.   We are witnessing an uncomfortable atmosphere of impunity for those squatters who feel secure in having a free home for a long time before being evicted and with the peace of mind that a minimum sanction translated into a slight fine and a mild crime falls on them.

The Government of the Nation must arbitrate a forceful and immediate solution to the suffering of helplessness of the owners of occupied properties, effective responses from the Executive of Pedro Sánchez are missing when it comes to evicting intruders from a home that the Constitution of 1978 It is considered as an inviolable property and over which its owner has full rights.   It is up to the Government of Spain to make a move, approve without further delay a law that effectively combats the illegal occupation of homes, a scourge that, according to the latest published data, has grown by 58% in the last five years, going from 7,739 cases reported in 2013 to 12,214 in 2018.Only between the months of January and June 2020 there have been 7,450 complaints due to occupation, 5% more than in the same period last year, an increase that even in the Region of Murcia is 4 times higher, placing it as the second Autonomous Community with greater number of litigation, behind only Galicia and according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. On average, there are 41 complaints per day for illegal occupation of buildings.

The calculations estimate that there is a minimum of 87,000 illegally occupied homes in Spain, to which should be added those whose occupation has not been reported.

These data show us how illegal occupation is a growing problem in our country that, in addition, seriously alters neighborhood coexistence and puts the safety and integrity of people and property at serious risk.

This is produced by the proliferation of organized gangs that are dedicated to occupying properties to rent them illegally to people or families in vulnerable situations or to obtain money from the legitimate owner in exchange for evicting the illegally usurped home.   It is necessary, we insist, in view of the aforementioned figures, to strengthen the legal system so that squatters cannot take refuge in any legal vacuum and thus protect and guarantee in a forceful way private property, coexistence and legal security in addition to fighting actively against the mafias that have made illegal occupation their business. That is why it is important that the Government of the Nation put all the mechanisms within its reach to end this problem, the magnitude of which gives it the status and category of a State matter.

Tomorrow can be your home!
