The Civil Guard in the region of Murcia, in the framework of the operation 'SLURRY', has researched the person responsible for the management of waste from a farm of Las Torres de Cotillas, which will have instructed proceedings on suspicion of crime against natural and environmental resources, and supposedly pig waste was discharged without purification into the channel of the rambla Salada.

An agent Nursery Fluvial Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) alerted the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil about allegedly illegal Rambla Salada, municipality of Las Torres de Cotillas discharges.

The agents moved to the place and found that the water outlet manifold of the old treatment plant of the municipality towards the runway Salada promenade brown water poured with strong smell of pig slurry, which was polluting the water and hindering the normal development of the purification system.

Given the seriousness of the facts, the Civil Guards carried out a thorough inspection of manholes collector and followed the path of the spill until you find a pig farm, where it was found that from a manhole located at the exit of the holding poured water of similar color and smell poured into the channel of rambla Salada.

The researchers then took samples from the different points found to have been sent for analysis to the laboratory of the CHS, with the objective of determining the identity of the water discharged into the ravine and its relationship with the pig farm, allegedly without the legally required mandatory clearance.

The agents have also verified how they have addressed appropriate measures to stop the spill and prevent further adverse effects on Rambla Salada, without prejudice to the responsibility for the damage already caused must take, if any, livestock enterprise works.

Once obtained all necessary evidence, the Civil Guard has investigated the person responsible for waste management of the farm, which will have instructed proceedings on suspicion of crimes against natural resources and the environment.

The 63-year Spanish and investigated, along samples of contaminated water and the proceedings, has been made available to the Magistrate's Court in Murcia (Murcia).

Imprisonment for six months to five years

The crime against natural resources and the environment is enshrined in the existing Criminal Code, which defines it as the provocation of or directly or indirectly carry out emissions, discharges, radiation, extraction or excavation, silting, noise, vibrations, injections or deposits in the atmosphere, soil, subsoil or ground, underground or maritime waters, including the sea, with an impact even in the border areas and catchments waters, by themselves or together with others, cause or may cause substantial air quality, soil or water, animals or plants damage, contravening laws or other provisions of protective general environment, and is punishable by imprisonment of six months to five years , a fine of ten to twenty four months and disqualification from profession or trade for between one to three years.
